CHARACTER CREATION

When creating a character on Thaerrathas there are different options. If you are not interested in playing a weird alien monster creature that are my own versions of the typical fantasy races, then please direct yourself to the segment below about Offworlders.

Otherwise, please consider the following.   I have changed the typical format for creating a character. I have replaced Races with Ancestry and replaced the Backgrounds component with a component known as Origins. The goal here is to remove the association of Culture with Race. The idea being that two people can be from the same Ancestry, but grow up in totally different societies and thusly have different skills and perspectives. Additionally to broaden the concept of what is included in a Race, such that peoples like hobgoblins, bugbears, and goblins would all be of the Goblinoid Ancestry.

What this results in is anything you gain from your Ancestry should be seen as a biological traits and what you gain from your Origin is what you learned from the culture and lifestyle you lived before being an Adventurer.

Thaerrathians

Regardless of what Origin or Ancestry you choose, please apply the following statistics to your character and make choices where necessary.

Ability Score Increases. Increase one Ability Score by 2 and increase a different Ability Score by 1.

Size. Medium or Small

Speed. 30ft

After this step, please refer to either Ancestry or Origins below.

Offworlders

  • Thaerrathas is a nexus of worlds. People from other worlds find themselves lost on this dying world.

If a player does not find any of the homebrew character creation options to their liking they can instead use the standard D&D 5e options. In this instance just use any of the published 5e materials. If there is a specific homebrew option from a 3rd party, please run it by me first, mostly so that I know what I will be dealing with.

When making an Offworlder, consider the world your character originated from and how they got transported to Thaerrathas. Perhaps they fell into a mysterious portal, were cursed by a higher being, or they performed an experimental spell incorrectly.

  • These are kind of tricky, because some of them have associations with the typical western fantasy setting, which Thaerrathas is not. So there might be a specific feature that does not align with the world, and thusly would not provide any benefit. The best example of this is Sailor. The boats of Thaerrathas do not operate like normal boats, they float on Silt (a super fine dust) instead of water, and there is no reasonable explanation why a Sailor from the Forgotten Realms would be able to sail a Silt Skimmer. Additionally, anything regarding your character's reputation or rank would likely not have any effect. There's too many options for me to cover in this document, so if playing an Offworlder is something you are considering, then we will specifically discuss this.
So just keep in mind that if you are choosing an Offworlder as an option, you might have a "dead feature". That being said, if that is the case, I would endeavor to create a replacement feature.

  • When making a character in this way, give yourself the following bonuses

+1 to one ability score of your choice (This bonus cannot be applied to the same Ability Score that a +2 Racial Bonus is also applied to)

Resistance to 1 damage type that isn't bludgeoning, piecing, or slashing.

Expertise(double proficiency bonus, in 1 skill you are already proficient with.

ORIGIN

There are many different peoples across Thaerrathas and the Moons.

Grottoes of Gloom

A series of tunnels and caverns through the ruins of the Gordian Union, a democracy of warriors who triumphed over tyranny. The sky if the grottoes is occluded by a plume of toxic smoke that also fills many of the tunnels and caverns, afflicting the minds of those who inhale it with madness.

  • Within the grottoes, there is a vast system of lakes and rivers with filled with tiny islands, all interconnected.

    Origin Page

  • Large expanses within the grottoes filled with ruins and crystals.

    Origin Page

  • The deepest, darkest parts of the grottoes. Underground storms, mushroom forests, and horrors occupy the deep places.

Sea of Silt

A series of islands, some small, some large, that were the mountaintops of the lands in the Gordian Union. The space in between these mountaintops is filled with an extremely fine and erosive dust known as Silt. Vehicles have been fashioned to sail on the silt.

  • Near the center of the Sea of Silt, where the highest mountain peaks and rugged highlands sit.

    Origin Page

  • Neighbouring the Aberrant Wastes, these lands are a quagmire of muddy islands and jungles of mutated plant-life.

    Origin Page

  • Just south of the Autumn Empire, is a series of windswept islands, covered in grasses and wild flowers.

ANCESTRY

All the people that exist on Thaerrathas and the Moons that aren’t Offworlders are Golems. There are two major groupings of golems. Primordial Golems, made out of natural materials such as Flesh, bones, plants, and earth, and there are Dragonscale Golems, made out of Dragonscales.

Primordial Golems

These Golems are made of natural materials; Flesh, Bone, Plants, Stone, Shells, Fungi, Ooze, and some are even made of Metal. While some Golems are made of singular materials, a fair number are made of a mixture. Within the Primordial Golems there are many subsets of common traits.

Dragonscale Golems

These are Golems made of dragonscales. While less diverse in material components than their Primordial counterparts, they are no less unique and varied. The common traits associated with them are features related to egg-laying animals, such as Fish, Amphibians, Reptiles, and Birds.
